The Nichols Family first came to Danville, KY in 1804 from Newport, Rhode Island. Located in Newport is American's oldest and longest running tavern, The White Horse Tavern. This tavern was owned and operated by the Nichols Family from 1730 - 1895. They are mentioned on the history page of the tavern web site. The Jonathan Nichols mentioned in the web page is the 8th Great Grandfather of Bill Nichols and the Walter Nichols mentioned is his 7th Great Grandfather.

The Nichols Family lived in one the "Newport Mansions" in middle 1700's, now known as Hunter House, and constructed the north half of the house between 1748 - 1754. Jonathon Nichols, Jr., a prosperous merchant and colonial deputy, was the brother of Walter Nichols mentioned above.
